Yaaaaay! You’re engaged, and you’ve started planning the day you’ve dreamt about since you were 4 years old. You’ve got the man of your dreams, the most perfect venue, and you’ve picked out your wedding photographer. Now, you’re prepping for engagement pictures. You obviously want to look your best! I’ve got you girl. Here are my top three do’s and don’ts when you’re preparing for your engagement session!
Your photographer will know what color combos go good together, what patterns to avoid or to use, and what type of vibe you’re after and how to achieve that, all while having the outfits flatter you and compliment your session location! Honestly, even if you’re feeling super great about your outfit, it’s not a bad idea to run it by your photographer to make sure that it’ll photograph well! There’s so many things that go into an outfit being the best it can be, so definitely get their insight to see if there’s anything that could make the outfits that much better!!
Guys, I cannot stress this enough. This is a once in a lifetime season that you’re in. You want your pictures to be true to you!! If you are really into hiking and being outdoorsy, your engagement photos should reflect that!! You don’t want to look back at these images 10 years down the road and think ‘what in the world were we thinking?! These photos don’t represent us AT ALL’. Avoid having that regret and stick to what you love!
It’s so easy to clam up and get suuuuper stressed about photos. I get it girl, I was there when I had my own engagement pictures done. I was STRESSED. There is soo much that goes into planning a wedding, and trying to feel your very best for your engagement session can be a struggle. But shift your mindset to think that you get to enjoy this super joyous, although sometimes stressful, time in your life and make the very best of it! Giggle when your heart tells you to giggle, give your fiancé a smooch when you want to. Be yourself during your session so the images reflect you and your lover!!
Okay now that we’ve talked about what you should do, now let’s talk about what I feel like you shouldn’t do.
Now, this is more a personal preference. I am all for having images represent you and who you are, if you haven’t figured that out by now! It feels inauthentic if you wear a super dark smokey eye, when your normal look is a simple neutral palette with mascara. Now, obviously you may want to feel extra glammed up, and there’s nothing wrong with that! But I would try to keep whatever route you go to be similar in style to what you normally wear. The same goes for hair! If you always wear your hair up in a messy bun (like me, because messy buns are life) then maybe go for a more classy or elegant looking updo that really allows your personality to shine through. Now, if you want to try a new look for your session, be my guest! Ultimately, it’s up to you how you want to show up and look like during your engagement session. At the end of the day, if you feel smokin’ hot and confident AF, that’s the most important thing.
Instead of wearing the same patterned shirt, trying wearing complimentary patterns and colors! There’s color combos that go perfectlyyy together. You can see some of my insight on styling your outfit for your engagement session in my style guide here!
As a professional, it’s our job to make our suggestions about what we feel will look best and fit the best with your personalities. But if what I or any other professional thinks doesn’t line up with your vision, then speak up girl! Your satisfaction in how things play out is ultimately my goal. So speak your mind, make sure that what your wearing, the location the pictures are at, etc are exactly what you want, and then have a freakin’ blast!!
